| Event | Speedo Ice Swim Africa |
| Date | 01. Jan. 1970 - 01. Jan. 1970 |
| Location | Nuwedam, Fraserburg, North West, |
| Type | Festivals |
| Description | Six cold water veterans and up to 30 other extreme swimmers are set for one of the coldest swims in Africa when they plunge into an icy dam in Fraserburg, near Sutherland in mid winter for the first Speedo Ice Swim Africa Wearing only Speedo costumes, swimming caps and goggles, the six veterans who include world record holders Ram Barkai and Theodore Yach will attempt to swim a mile on July 23 in bone-chilling Nuwedam in remote Fraserburg, near Sutherland, Northern Cape – one of the coldest regions in Africa. The dam temperature is expected to plummet to below 5C at the time. Fraserburg is a five hour drive from Cape Town and is one of the most authentic, well preserved and coldest towns in the Karoo. The brainchild of Barkai who holds a Guinness World Record for having undertaken the world’s most southerly swim (a kilometre in an icy lake, 1C, in Antarctica in early 2008) the event is a first for Africa and part of Barkai’s goal to undertake an ice swim (5C or colder) on every continent. In addition to the mile, 30 other newcomers to “ice” swimming, but all regular cold water swimmers, will attempt a shorter Endurance Swim of 600m in Nuwedam. Both swims are set for Saturday 23 July, usually the coldest time of the year in the area, with temperatures plummeting to minus 10 degrees Celsius or below some nights. | Location | Sandton Convention Centre, Sandton, Gauteng, |
| Type | Festivals |
| Description | Whisky-Lovers, whether connoisseurs or occasional sippers of a dram or two, are looking forward to the FNB Whisky Live Festival held at the Sandton Convention Centre on 9-11 November 2011. Introduced five years ago, the festival has quickly become the largest consumer whisky show in the world. Featuring more than 180 top brands, same of them new releases, from Scotland, Ireland, the US, Canada, Wales, Japan, and South Mrica. Whisky is progressively becoming the drink of~ choice for adults in the 40-45 year age group, says Sian Neubert, cofounder of NC Connect, the company that organises the South African event. There is an international trend, with whisky festivals being held in London, Paris, New York, Belgium and Tokyo. South Africa, however, is leading the way, with the Whisky Live Festival being the worlds largest consumer show. With the industry sending its distillers, master blenders and global brand ambassadors to present the whisky tasting workshops and give consumers a chance to meet the faces behind the brands, the festival promises to be as informative as it is entertaining. Scottish, American and Irish brands remain the most wellknown. but whiskies of the world from as far afield as Japan and Wales are beginning to feature, too. Festival visitors have 15 one hour whisky tasting workshops from which to choose. Hosted by international master distifiers, global brand ambassadors, and whisky experts, they are a chance to taste whiskies not available in the main tasting hail or possibly South Africa. These lectures will run during the festival and be held in meeting rooms that hold 60 people. Schweppes Royal Mixing Zone Schweppes will facilitate the Schweppes Royal mixing zone where visitors can learn how to mix various Whisky-Based Schweppes cocktails. The original five producers, who have participated on every auction since 1975, are again represented. They are Delheim, Groot Constantia, Overgaauw and Simonsig, and, of course, Nederburg. Debuting alongside these stalwarts and other of the country's finest producers are newcomers Ataraxia, JP Bredell Wines, Capaia, Deetlefs Familie, De Morgenzon, De Reuck, Fryer’s Cove, Orange River Cellars and Perdeberg Winery. |

About: De Waal Park in Gardens will come alive with the sounds of some of SA's top musicians this Summer. Proudly sponsored by REMAX, the Summer Concerts in the Park will showcase an exciting and varied line-up, representing the best Cape Town has to offer. On Sunday 4 December, the SAMA winning instrumental supergroup Sterling EQ will be treating the public to a selection of their unique brand of instrumental pop, featuring some of the crowd-pleasing favourites and virtuoso showstoppers which will also be showcased during the group’s European debut tour later in December. The four-piece has performed at globally publicised events and shared stages with international music icons, including Boney M and Snow Patrol. The group is internationally recognised for their contribution to the traditionally European Classical crossover / instrumental pop genre, to which they bring a subtle but undeniably South African flavour. The rest of the concerts will feature artists equally esteemed: the multi-award winning, gold selling Karen Zoid will rock the park on 18 December, while the accomplished Philharmonic Brass Quintet will follow on 15 January. On 5 February, the Afro-Operatic Pop sensations, The Gugulethu Tenors, will fill the park with song followed by the multi-layered African-Ska band, The Rudimentals, on the 19th. International Jazz & Pop star, singer & actor Ike Moriz will be charming the park on the 4th of March with flamenco guitar virtuoso Saudiq Khan performing in true Spanish-style with his two- piece band on the 18th. The grande finale takes place on 1 April featuring the internationally acclaimed young Afro-pop star Nomfusi. All the Summer Concerts in the Park will start at 15h00, and entrance is free! Patrons are encouraged to arrive from 14h00. De Waal Park is located on Molteno Street. This Friends of De Waal Park initiative presents the Mother City’s most esteemed artists and headliners. De Waal Park’s Edwardian bandstand will come to life every other Sunday, with one of the New7Wonders of Nature, Table Mountain, as backdrop! The Friends of De Waal Park Association was formed by a small group of Park users with the intention of rehabilitating this wonderful Victorian Park originating in 1895 by the then Mayor of Cape Town Mayor D.C. de Waal. The 300 strong Friends of De Waal Park Association’s role is to maintain, upgrade, refurbish and extend the amenities to the highest levels all financed by Members yearly fees. Donations and funds raised by both the members and generous Sponsors. De Waal Park is now a secure, serene wondrous haven for all - Parents, Babies, Children, Dogs, Girls and Boys, young and old – a communal meeting place nestling under our spectacular Table Mountain The Summer Concerts in the Park will kick off in style on Sunday 27 November at 15h00, with a performance by Afro-Jive band Hot Water. | Event | Mother City Queer Projects MCQP 2011 |
| Date | 17. Dec. 2011 - 17. Dec. 2011 |
| Location | De Waterkant, Cape Town, Western Cape, |
| Type | Festivals |
| Description | Mother City Queer Projects is a Queer
Art Party Project, now in it's 17th
incarnation. Each year the main event is
a huge costume party. A new theme is
chosen for The Big Night each year. The
theme guides the creative team, artists,
and partygoers, in their
conceptualisation and creativity.
Partygoers (and their costumes), artists and volunteers are the core strength of this uniquely Cape Town Project. Each year we start from scratch with a new theme, which means a ton of time, energy and creativity is invested in making sure YOU have the best night out. On our side, we collect the Cape's hottest artists to create art and party decor. We find the countries' most appropriate acts, the best DJs, bands, whatever will conspire to give you this year's best night out. On the night you'll all meet to get ready, it's the only event in Cape Town where you don't want to be fashionably late. Too much to see, too many people to do. Get there and scope out the costumes, the art, the decor, the entertainment and then dance the night away...By which point it's also fairly customary to dump the more inhibiting aspects of your costume. Along with your inhibitions. The party is filled with hundreds of beautiful people (this is Cape Town after all) a bonus being they often wear very little. Apart from beauty, there is no defining characteristic about the revelers: age, gender, race, sexuality all blur in this delicious divine queer melting city. |

| Event | Cape Town Minstrel Carnival |
| Date | 01. Feb. 2012 - 01. Feb. 2012 |
| Location | Cape Town, Cape Town Central, Western Cape, |
| Type | Festivals |
| Description | 'Kaapse klopse' or Cape Town Minstrel
Carnival: The city of Cape Town comes
alive to celebrate new year in a raucous
carnival the likes of which are not seen
elsewhere in the world, unless you’re
ready to compare it with the mardi gras
in New Orleans and the carnevale in Rio
de Janeiro, which it isn’t, not quite,
although certainly it has its roots therein.
The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, as it’s officially known, takes place every year at new year when thousands of musicians, singers, dancers and tailors connected to them, gear themselves for the traditional ‘Kaapse klopse’ or ‘Coon carnival’ (its more common name - although this isn’t a particularly politically correct term in the ‘new South Africa’). The origin of the carnival stretches back to the 19th century and has its origins in the time of slavery in Cape Town, when the original citizens of District Six were allowed their one day off on January 1st. The event, which has developed a distinct Cape flavour, is also supposed to have ties to the minstrel entertainers who stopped off in Cape Town on huge American ocean liners, over 100 years ago. Over ten thousand costumed, banjo-picking musicians and dancers, their faces painted white, as opposed to the original black-painted faces of the visiting minstrels, parade and march through the streets, followed by a series of dance, singing and costume competitions at Green Point Stadium. With band names like ‘dixies’, ‘the district six band’, and songs like ‘take me to Mannenberg’, this is a celebration of life and new year, rather than a reflection on the days of slavery, for most of those involved are third or fourth generation, and the more garish the costume, and the more the banjo tunes can make your feet tap, the better. |

| Location | , Tankwa-Karoo National Park, North West, |
| Type | Concerts |
| Description | This is a freedom of expression festival with the intention of building a temporary community though collaborative arts projects, in a completely non-commercial environment. This is a place to collaborate, cooperate, and add to the public environment. To build community. This “gift economy” means that here is no commercial exchange at the event - no vending, no cash bars and no branded promotion of services or products, the aim being real social interaction. It is an exercise in total self-reliance: participants camp for four days and provide entirely for themselves, including all their water, shelter and food needs. If you come to AfrikaBurn, you must participate in whatever way you can. We want no spectators. What to bring? You need to bring all your food, shelter, water, fuel, and basic first aid supplies. You must bring at least 5 litres of water per person per day (for drinking, preparing food and washing) and always carry a bottle of water with you. It is important to note that no rubbish bins are provided! Whatever you bring to the event must be taken back out with you. Venue: Tankwa-Karoo National Park |

| Event | Suidoosterfees 2012 |
| Date | 01. Jan. 1970 - 01. Jan. 1970 |
| Location | Venue: Artscape, DF Malan Street, Cape Town, Cape Town Central, Western Cape, |
| Type | Concerts |
| Description | A warm welcome to the 9th Suidoosterfees, where we are unashamedly Cape. What can be more Cape than our own Marc Lottering, with his Cape dialect, Cape hairstyle and his Cape character Aunty Merle? Or the Gugulethu Tenors and Three Tons of Fun? Or a “ghaatjie” on a taxi in Kap’An (also a typical Cape word)? Or in titles like Journey to Cape Town, Allie Pad Funny Worcester (to Cape Town, naturally) and Weskus Dramafees? Or in the widely popular Let’s Mix It, which has been in Cape Town theatres for quite some time, but now for the first time at the Suidoosterfees. Displacement and eviction are nothing new for the people of Cape Town. This is spectacularly portrayed in Dis!Place and in Elsa Joubert’s Sendeling, which debuts at the SOF. Cape people also know the search for identity, as shown in Scars, and of living with HIV/Aids, as in I am Here. But we can also shake our bodies like Alistair Izobell in the Mixed Bredie concert. And the Cape of Storms, which we all know so well, is the dramatic setting for the world renowned Wagnerian opera, Der Fliegende Holländer, a challenging production taken on by the Suidoosterfees, along with Cape Town opera singers and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Also playwright Athol Fugard's Die Kaptein se Tier, which will be performed for the first time in Cape Town, is set at sea. Suidoosterfees, Cape Townl Suidoosterfees, Cape Town Then, we are proud of our own Cape Town opera diva, Virginia Davids, who can be seen in When the Saints go Marching In, written by the well-known Cape Town writer, Hennie Aucamp. The soap stars Theodore Jantjies en Vinette Ebrahim return in the 2010 sell-out hit Vaselinetjie, and also see the well-loved Shaleen Surtie-Richards in As ek maar geweet het, and the TV presenter Francois Toerien in his own show, BEE Kômpliant. And because we in Cape Town love gospel, two big Gospel Concerts will be staged this year for the first time. Also, our Cape love of jazz, hiphop, choir music, classical music, books, art, whisky and food can be enjoyed. And to demonstrate our Cape Town hospitality, we welcome with huge applause the Zimbabwean actor in Cockroach, the leather puppets from Indonesia, the Indian films and the well-known South African music stars Mango Groove and Thandiswa Mazwai. Who wants to miss this “Kaapsgeit”? Come, celebrate being “Kaaps” with us. Venue: Artscape, DF Malan Street, Cape Town |

| Location | uShaka Marine World, Point Waterfront, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, |
| Type | Concerts |
| Description | Attention! uShaka Marine World will be saluting the very best of military music at SeaWorld’s Dolphin Arena on Friday, 20 May and Saturday, 21 May 2011. This time round, uShaka Marine World’s heroes not only include its legendary dolphins, but two military bands that have earned their stripes both locally and abroad. The SA Army Band KwaZulu Natal - a combination of the former 121 South African Infantry Battalion Band, former Navy band and members of the former Eastern Province Command Staff Band - started out in 2001. The band is known for its ceremonial parades as well as a performance at the annual SATMA awards, previous KwaZulu Natal Military Tattoos and more. South African favourites such as Impi, Pata Pata, Homeland and What a Wonderful World are on its play list. The 1 Medical Battalion Group Pipe Band which has made its mark at major national and International events - including the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and World Pipe Championships in 2004 - will be blowing up a storm with the likes of Scotland the Brave, Am Na Wae Ta Baide Awe, Sarie Marias, Cock of the North, Amazing Grace and Flower of Scotland. uShaka Marine World and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) believe this will be a whole new entertainment experience that will combine the best of traditional African culture and age-old military tradition and act as a precursor to the upcoming 2011 Kwa-Zulu Natal Military Tattoo. Last year’s military tattoo at the Royal Agricultural show in Pietermaritzburg was described as the “best event held in the last 15 years.” This show will continue that proud tradition. So, roll up at 19:00 hours on Friday, 20 May and Saturday, 21 May. Tickets can be booked through Computicket. | Description | Radisson Blu Hotel PE supports Eastern Cape leukemia benefit - The Red Ball - a sizzling jazzy initiative organised by the Igazi Foundation and Dr Neil Littleton. As the Eastern Cape is considered by SA Haematologists to have the highest incidences of blood cancers in the country, this black tie occasion will treat all guests to an evening of opulence. Jazz music and entertainment will be provided by a 20-piece Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Graham Scott, and renowned Jazz musicians Gloria Bosman and Tim Moloi. International performer, Gloria Bosman is well known for her flair of fusion, gospel and spiritual jazz renditions, and has had the honour of performing for local ex-presidents Thabo Mbeki and Nelson Mandela. Tim Moloi is also one of South Africa’s extraordinary talents with his smooth velvet and masterful range. Tim is an established and formidable singer with a talent that ranks amongst the all-time greats. Amongst his highlights, he has performed at the Africa Peace Awards, Oprah Winfrey Live Your Life event, the 2010 FIFA World Cup bid banquet and the Nederberg Wine Auction at the Fancourt Ball. A Red Ball commissioned art piece and three limited edition copies by renowned award-winning visual artist, Jennifer Ord, will also be auctioned during the event. Jennifer Ords’ artworks express philosophy-inspired ideas regarding ways of being in a world that is infinitely and intriguingly complex, paradoxical and often beyond the linear grasp of logic and dogma. Her imagery, media and techniques used vary: from semi-figurative to abstract subject matter; from painting and drawing with a mixture of traditional materials; to the assembling of found and fabricated three-dimensional forms. Toinette Koupman, Algoa FM Marketing Manager adds, “In terms of our involvement the Red Ball gives Algoa FM an opportunity to support top South African artists in an exclusive evening of entertainment and at the same time raise funds and awareness for the Igazi Foundation who research why our region has the highest incidence of blood disorders.” All proceeds of this black tie event will go towards developing better haematological services for the Eastern Cape and Port Elizabeth 1st Haematology/Stem Cell Unit. It showcases the best of local design - original, contemporary and innovative product that is quintessentially South African - no derivatives, and no imports. It is curated, not filled. Our advisory panel of the best South African designers, stylists, critics and industry experts, curates the Expo floor and decides who is represented there. The panel is representative of our positioning. Where a designer is not known by the panel, a process of submission is engaged where the designer's work is circulated for the panel's input. In addition to encouraging exhibitors to trade directly to the South African public, we also bring out several international buyers to stimulate the export market. In 2004, the Design Indaba Expo was inaugurated in association with the Department of Trade & Industry. The Expo provides a commercial platform for the finest South African designers to leverage local goods and services to the global market. It introduces the most influential international buyers to the finest South African creative product to encourage export. There is also an impact on the local market. The Expo aims to create discerning consumers through exposure to the principles and products of good design, resulting in the demand and production of innovative, evolving and excellent South African creative product. | Description | The Bloemfontein Rose Festival had its inception in 1976, when a couple of council members decided that such a festival was appropriate, as Bloemfontein was known as the City of Roses. It attracts thousands of visitors and rose lovers from across South Africa and the world to experience and participate in this spectacle of roses and assortment of events taking place throughout the city. From the earliest of time, roses have been used as tokens of love, sympathy, repentance and atonement. Roses also signify the coming together of people, regardless the occasion or purpose adding beauty, serenity, colour and glamour to any gathering. Bloemfontein, meaning the “Fountain of Flowers”, can surely be considered the most appropriate destination for celebrating the rose, with festivities centered around the Loch Logan Waterfront on of the most recognized landmarks in the city. Loch Logan Waterfront, the shopping and entertainment capital of Central South Africa, has aligned itself this year to participate fully in the Bloemfontein Rose Festival, one of the absolute highlights of the Central South African events calendar. The Waterfront will play host to mass flower displays created by local nurseries as well as the official municipal rose festival display built by the Dept of Parks and cemetries of the Mangaung Municipality. The Free State Rose Society’s champion Rose Cut Competition will also be hosted in the Mall, with approximately seven hundred entrants from across the country expected to take part. Loch Logan Waterfront will also host the Miss Volksblad Rosebud competition, held in conjunction with the Volksblad daily newspaper. This competition is for little ladies between the age of three and four years old and attracts hundreds of entries from all over central South Africa. Other activities in the city include a gardening competition presented by the Dept of Parks and Cemeteries. Bus tours from the Waterfront to the winning gardens will be available during the festival. With over 15 000 roses on display, and a line-up of top class entertainment, Loch Logan Waterfront’s participation will enhance the overall quality and success of this festival, establishing itself as the heart of this splendid cacophony of colour, entertainment and rose celebrations.
