Residents urged to collect IDs from local home affairs

The City of Ekurhuleni is assisting with transport for the elderly.

More than 1 500 identity documents, both smart IDs and green barcoded
IDs, are to be collected from the Department of Home Affairs in
Kempton Park.
The Department of Home Affairs is currently experiencing an
overwhelming number of uncollected IDs nationally, and the City of
Ekurhuleni is no exception.
According to recent figures released by home affairs in Ekurhuleni,
there are 19 150 smart IDs and 1 528 green barcoded IDs left
uncollected at different offices.
The City of Ekurhuleni has entered into a partnership with the
Department of Home Affairs to fast-track ID collections. The City is
providing transport to elderly residents, people with a disability and
military veterans.
Non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and
churches have also been roped in to assist. The City has also used its
popular community outreach programme, Siyaqhuba, to advocate for
application and collection of birth certificates and IDs.
Of the 1 572 at Kempton home affairs, 1 419 are smart IDs and 153
green barcoded IDs.
