The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs in Parliament adopted the Civil Union Amendment Bill on Wednesday. The bill, which will be presented to the National Assembly to pass, will afford same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Lawyers for Human Rights says the new regulations propose that foreign children be issued with a `confirmation of birth` and not a birth certificate CAPE TOWN - Legal groups have raised concern over the Home Affairs Department`s plan to discontinue birth certificates for foreign children born in South Africa. The public has until Friday to comment on proposed new regulations to the Births and Deaths Registration Act as it pertains to refugees.

Archive photo: Ashraf Hendricks In an important victory for the rights of asylum seekers, the Constitutional Court has found that their temporary permits must automatically be extended while their case is under judicial review. South Africa is home to at least 400,000 asylum seekers and refugees. An asylum seeker is someone who claims, in an application to the Department of Home Affairs, to have fled from a place where they have been persecuted or where they are in danger.
