Africa.
About 500 refugees are still living in wretched conditions in Cape Town camp
Five hundred people are still living at Paint City in Bellville, without proper sanitation.
They still want to be resettled in another country, but the UNHCR says there is little prospect of it happening.
The home affairs department, which is responsible for the camp, has not replied to our questions.
Three years ago in October 2019, refugees started a protest at the offices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cape Town and Pretoria. They demanded resettlement in a country other than South Africa.
CAPE TOWN ` Members of Parliament (MPs) said they`re worried about the high cost of DNA tests that prevent migrants from registering the birth of their children.
Lawyers for Human Rights told the Home Affairs portfolio committee this week that the digitisation of the registration system and other requirements make it almost impossible for migrants to get documented.
CAPE TOWN: “Digital nomads” are people who stay in a location temporarily, while working remotely.
Cape Town has immense potential to attract digital nomads to its picturesque shores, and recently struck a deal with Airbnb to lure working travelers to the city.
“A new world of travel has emerged in which many workers are untethered to an office,” says Velma Corcoran of Airbnb.
“Together with Cape Town Tourism, we want to make it easier for people to enjoy the newfound flexibility to work and travel, and help local communities capture the benefits of tourism.”
Refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa have problems with the Department of Home Affairs` online system, leaving them vulnerable to deportation and their children to `structural xenophobia`, Lawyers for Human Rights told Parliament.
Lindokuhle Mdabe of Lawyers for Human Rights told the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday that they had noted several challenges since the department introduced its online system.
South Africa`s e-Visa system, meant to simplify the process for travel to the country, has been marred by delays and technical challenges. Now, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is in talks with a private company, already heavily involved with visa admin, to help out.
`The decision to introduce the e-Visa was informed by observable benefits of this system. It is reliable, client-friendly, and convenient for visa applicants, airlines, trading partners and Home Affairs officials,` announced Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in December 2019.
Almost all leading estate agencies in South Africa operate off franchise models.
This means you can buy a brand-name turnkey property business and benefit from ongoing marketing and head office support.
But several companies fiercely compete in this sector, and most don`t disclose total financial commitments until you`ve declared an interest and signed an NDA.
Here are some property franchises that do disclose fees, which range between R500,000 and R1.2million.
Covid-19 threw a few curveballs into South Africa`s property market but rebounded to experience unprecedented activity levels in 2022.
It`s possible to tap into this as an estate agent by earning commissions on sales. But if you have deep pockets and an entrepreneurial spirit, it`s also possible to buy a turnkey real estate franchise from several leading brands.
The Department of Home Affairs is slowly rolling out its services to more bank branches in South Africa, with a new office opening up in the Northern Cape, and more on the way.
Presenting to the portfolio committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday, the department said that it is in the process of opening a new office at the Kathu Mall in the Northern Cape.
The office is currently taking walk-ins as part of its stress testing and will go into full operation soon. SA
