• Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi faces being held in contempt of court after failing to comply with a court order. • In October, the court ordered Motsoaledi to decide on a foreign national`s declaration of non-prohibition. • In 2023, Motsoaledi often found himself on the wrong side of court rulings and watched more than one deadline pass by without the required action from his side. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi yet again failed to comply with a court order, and will be held in contempt if he misses a new deadline set by the court.

The Border Management Authority says it has recorded the highest number of people processed in a day this festive season at the Lebombo border post- going into Mozambique. It says that its operations were in full swing to facilitate and manage the movement of people and goods across 72 ports of entry nationwide. An immigration law expert says that the number of visa applications blocked due to inefficiencies at Home Affairs is likely worse than the department lets on and added it has little intention of addressing the issue because of bureaucratic attitudes towards foreigners. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi noted in a recent parliamentary Q&A that the backlog in temporary residency visas remained at over 74,309 unchanged from the department’s last report at the end of October 2023 adding that an additional backlog of 43,944 in permanent residency permits also remains.
