Cape Town - The 33-kilometre trip up the Sani Pass to the highest pub
in Africa and beyond into the `mountain kingdom` of Lesotho is set to
become more accessible and act as a magnet to boost visitor numbers
between South Africa and Lesotho when it`s resurfacing is complete.
The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation says the laying of an
asphalt surface at an estimated cost of R 887 million is already well
underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Both South Africa and Lesotho have agreed that the safety of a gravel
road is diminished through constant use and changing weather patterns
and that the upgrade was essential, according to the Lesotho Tourism
Development Corporation.
But the pass is known for its challenging hairpin bends, which in fact
is seen as part of the thrill of the experience.
"We have no doubt that increasing numbers of tourists will take to the
road. All that will change, however, will be the fact that instead of
just having a drink at the pub at the road`s summit, more will be
encouraged to drive into Lesotho and experience the unique beauty of
Africa`s highest kingdom," said Mpaiphele Maqutu, Chief Executive
Officer at the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation.
San Pass adventurers can add these key attractions to their bucket list:
Afriski: Africa`s biggest snow-ski resort has been making headlines
with all the recent snow action.
