A man who allegedly pretended to be a Home Affairs official was
arrested on Friday, Gauteng police said.

"During... [an] operation, information was received about a bogus home
affairs employee who is [allegedly] making fake identity documents for
foreign nationals and who was on his way to Zamimpilo informal
settlement to collect application forms," Warrant Officer Gordon
Billing said.

"The police managed to intercept the suspect and on searching him,
they found two completed applications for South African ID documents
on him. After questioning him, the 28-year-old suspect took the police
to his residence in Dobsonville.

"On searching his room, various items, including 52 completed ID
application forms with photos, 14 completed green ID books and two
finger print pads were found. A home affairs name tag and ID card
bearing his name was also found."

Billing said it was established that he did not work for Home Affairs,
however police suspected he had friends in the Krugersdorp Home
Affairs office.

"The investigation will continue to determine who he was working with."
He was expected to appear in the Sophiatown Magistrate's Court on Monday.
