Boy alleges assault at Home Affairs

An 18-year-old has complained to police about a "stressed" Home
Affairs manager who he claims head-butted him twice when he inquired
about his identity document at a Durban branch of the department.

Shortly after the alleged assault on Tuesday, the teen's mother asked
on Facebook if others had had "nasty experiences at the
department".

"My son was headed [sic] twice (by an apparently stressed senior
manager who's on medication and trying to quit smoking) for asking him
where he could copy his birth certificate," she posted on the Phoenix
Crime Watch page.

She did not respond to requests to be interviewed by The Times.

Home Affairs spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete said yesterday there were two
sides to the story and he was "glad" the youth had reported the matter
to the police because they would figure it out.

The manager denied having touched the teen, Tshwete said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said a case of
common assault was opened at the Durban Central police station for
investigation.
