Gauteng`s manager of home affairs‚ Albert Matsuang‚ told MPs that
there "were more than 60 cases of fraud and corruption" connected to
the new card system.

Either Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba "is lying‚ or he is in
absolute denial that the new smart ID system is corruptible and needs
to be improved"‚ the Democratic Alliance`s Haniff Hoosen said.

He said Gigaba`s contention that "no corruption cases have been
detected during the roll-out of the smart ID card process" had been
contradicted during a recent presentation to Parliament`s home affairs
portfolio committee.

He said Gauteng`s manager of home affairs‚ Albert Matsuang‚ told MPs
that there "were more than 60 cases of fraud and corruption" connected
to the new card system.

Hoosen said Matsuang had explained "in detail how syndicates have
managed to infiltrate the system"… "which makes this system
susceptible to fraud and corruption as was the last system".

Gigaba will be given "an opportunity to provide clarity on this
matter" when further parliamentary questions are put to him‚ Hoosen
added.

"This will allow him to put on record – once and for all – whether
there have been cases of corruption‚ and what steps he is taking to
improve the system."
