Travellers to Zanzibar have been cautioned to stay indoors.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on Wednesday warned
travellers to Zanzibar, Tanzania, to stay in a safe location and avoid
travelling into the centre of Stone Town if possible.

The alert follows increased post-election tension in Zanzibar.

"There are heightened tensions throughout Tanzania, particularly in
Zanzibar, where violence could escalate quickly," the advisory reads.

"If you`re in Zanzibar remain in a safe location (hotel or
home), avoid being out on the streets and avoid travelling into the
centre of Stone Town if possible."

Travellers are also warned to be aware of their surroundings and avoid
political rallies, polling stations, large crowds or public
demonstrations. "Make sure you have a means of communication with you
at all times and monitor local media for updates," the advisory
reads.
