Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has launched a new Home Affairs
office in Somerset West outside Cape Town.

The office has been fitted with a new electronic payment system as
part of plans to modernise the department.

Gigaba says the shift towards electronic payment with debit and credit
cards is part of the department's modernisation programme started two
years ago.

The new payment method has been piloted in Johannesburg and the new
office unveiled on Thursday is the first in the Western Cape to have
this facility.

Gigaba says this means applicants will no longer need to carry cash,
making it more convenient.

Over the next several months until March, the department plans to
rollout 38 more smart ID card offices, over the current 140.
