It is said to be a step closer to a paperless environment.

The department of Home Affairs will be conducting upgrading processes
at 140 of its offices, shutting down passport and ID applications for
five days. The upgrades which include hardware and software will be
done from 27 November to 2 December only at offices with the live
capture system.

Applicants needing these documents have been advised to apply before
the 27 of this month. Director General Mkuseli Apleni made the
announcement in Pretoria this afternoon.

He said the upgrade formed part of the broader effort of modernising
all systems at Home Affairs.

With the new upgrades applicants will be able to apply for these
documents online and then do the fingerprint and picture capture at a
bank such as FNB, ABSA, etc. "These innovations should take us closer
to creating a paperless environment with all the benefits of
e-government are for better service."
