Should countries drop their borders?

The catastrophe in Syria is threatening to derail the Schengen treaty,
with European countries closing their borders following the
crisis.

In a recent column, Nigel Vere Nicoll, Chief Executive of Atta, argues
that, while security is important, the Schengen concept is a valuable
one and should be applied to Africa too.

"Inevitably,
cross-border trade and tourism must become pillars of the African
economy in the next decade," he says.
