5 reasons why the tourism industry is sceptical about the latest numbers

Source: Cape Talk, 13/01/2016

Frost gave the following five reasons why the tourism industry is very
concerned about the latest tourism numbers:
• The industry questions the veracity of these numbers and the timing
of their release.
• The industry does not know the source of Home Affairs` "0.6%
turnaways" number. Airlines haven`t been of much help.
• Do these figures indicate total arrivals or tourism arrivals?
• With our favourable exchange rate the mid-December to mid-January
growth should be closer to 27%.
• Uncertainty regarding the still looming unabridged birth certificate
debacle.
Official tourism stats only come out three months after the
fact.

Even if the 7% number is correct – considering the exchange rate – we
should be getting 27%. One of the impediments are these unabridged
birth certificates.
