South Africa announces moratorium on deportation of Lesotho immigrants

Source: Ghana News, 01/02/2016

Lesotho immigrants living in South Africa without the right documents
will no longer be deported from now until December 31, 2016, Home
Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Monday.

Lesotho immigrants can apply for the Lesotho Special Permit (LSP) to
regularise their stay in South Africa, the minister said on the
Morning Live program of the South African Broadcasting Corporation
(SABC).

Only those who were employed prior to the announcement of the LSP can
apply for these new permits, Gigaba said.

The SA cabinet approved the LSP last November, with the aim of
regularizing the stay of Lesotho nationals currently residing
illegally in South Africa, some with fraudulently obtained SA
documents, and others abusing the visa waiver between Lesotho and
South Africa.

Applications for this new permit will be conducted at selected Home
Affairs centres in nine provinces across the country.
The LSP is for Lesotho nationals who are working, studying or running
businesses in SA without appropriate documentation, and have been in
the country in such capacity before Sept. 30, 2015.

It`s estimated that over 400, 000 Lesotho nationals stand to benefit
from this initiative.
