Register shortage at Home Affairs may threaten 'I do's'
The lack of access to marriage registers at local Home Affairs offices
could threaten several wedding ceremonies planned for this season,
explains marriage officer, Jaco Venter.

According to Venter the Home Affairs Department is experiencing a
countrywide shortage of marriage registers.

However, Home Affairs' Vusumuzi Mkhize is adamant that there is
sufficient supply at local offices such as Bellville.

Venter says that both private and public marriage officers have not
received documents from the department, potentially delaying nuptials.

If there are no registers, no legal marriages can be registered. The
implications is that there might be weddings that will have to be
cancelled.

Mkhize says there should be contingency plans in place for offices
where registers have been depleted.

There is no marriage that must be postponed, we can't defer dreams of
other people because people cannot get registers from the nearby office.

According to Mkhize, Home Affairs will replenish marriage registers
over the weekend and will conduct an audit to determine how many
documents each office uses on an annual basis.
