Rivals gleeful as Home Affairs put the skids on tourism starting with Jo'burg

Dubbed The Tourism Terminator, Minister of Home Affairs Malusi
Gigaba`s bureaucratic assault on the tourism industry should see off
Johannesburg`s status as gateway to Africa.

With tourism numbers climbing in South Africa, Home Affairs`
bureaucratic assault on the tourism industry would appear to be
irritating rather than catastrophic.

In fact it is playing into the hands of the extremely active forces of
airlines and their hubs determined to unseat Johannesburg as Africa`s
premier hub and gateway into Africa, according to Tourism Update
publisher, David Marsh.

There is nothing gradual about it, he warns and the results will be
far-reaching for the whole of South Africa when long-haul airlines
have to downscale capacity to OR Tambo. Until now, the SA-based
tourism sector has regarded access to the sub-continent as its
domain.

In a column published in Tourism Update yesterday, he warns that, from
now on South Africa needs to fight for every passenger and improve the
user experience at OR Tambo, or roll over and accept that
Johannesburg`s days as the gateway to Africa are over and that
airlines will begin to trim back services to cater for South Africans
only.
