Anger mounts as Home Affairs shuts doors early

It is alleged the employees do not receive overtime and therefore
closed earlier to finish their work by 4pm.

The operating hours state that the offices will be open from 8am to
4pm on weekdays.

HIGHWAY residents were left baffled when the Pinetown Home Affairs
employees closed its offices an hour early, today.

According to Liesel Manggos, she rushed to the local office to apply
for her 16-year-old son’s ID document after picking him up from school.
“We rushed up the ramp and the security guard let someone in and then
locked the door. I was then told that they were closed. It was only
2.50pm,” said a concerned Manggos.

Manggos asked to speak to the manager and a man, who declined to
reveal his name or position, addressed the crowd of more than 20
people outside the Home Affairs building.

“He told us the doors were closed and locked as the staff needed to be
finished with their work by 4pm as none of the employees received
overtime,” said Manggos.

He allegedly said the staff still had to process the requests of the
50 to 100 people still inside the building. “When the man left, I
looked through the glass and there were no more than 25 people
inside,” she said.

Among the crowd waiting outside the local Home Affairs office was a
woman with her one-month-old baby. “This is ridiculous. It clearly
states on the door that the offices close at 4pm. He just told us that
there was nothing he could do and that we had to come back another
day,” concluded Manggos.
