The home affairs ministry of Namibia has no plans to extend issuing
of death certificates programmes at local hospitals as it plans to
install an e-death notification system set to be tested in Windhoek
next month.
This was announced by minister Frans Kapofi in parliament last week.
“We intent to start a pilot phase of the e-death notification system
here at our two hospitals, the Central and the Katutura hospitals
during July and August this year. I am pleased to announced that the
ministry together with the office of the prime minster and the
ministry of health; the ministry of safety and security as well as the
Namibia Statistics Agency have developed an e-death notification
system,” he said.
He added that one of the objectives of introducing this system is to
reduce the turnaround time of death certificates.
Kapofi also said that it is unfortunate that the ministry will not be
able to roll out the new system to all hospitals as it will be based
in offices within close proximity to maternity wards and that the
expected high traffic might pose a danger to new born babies.
“In this process we are also considering the option of opening offices
at the state mortuaries for ease of processing,” he said.
