How to get a South African passport

Did you know?
You do not have to go to Home Affairs to apply for a passport. You
can apply for your passport at selected banks.
This is what you need to do to get one:
• Visit your nearest bank and complete a passport application
form.
• An original copy of your identity document, or a birth
certificate
• If you are under the age of 18 years, you will need parental
consent.
• When applying from abroad you need a completed determination
of citizenship Form DHA-529
• Two colour photographs that comply with the passport and ID
photograph specifications.
• You will be required to pay a R400 passport fee.
Minors under the age of 16 will need the following:
1. Complete an application form:
• In the case of married parents, the passport application form
must be signed by both parents and the child.
• The child and both parents should be present when the
application is submitted. A letter of consent and copy of ID will NO
longer be accepted if one of the parents is not present.
• If the guardian other than the parents, must bring proof of
the high court’s appointment must accompany the application.
• If a parent cannot be located or refuses to consent, the
matter should be referred to the children’s court. The court’s
decision must be submitted with the application for the passport.
2. The child’s South African birth certificate and a copy thereof.
3. Two colour passport photographs that comply with the passport and
ID photograph specifications
4. Payment of R400 passport fee
5. In 3-8 weeks you should receive notification to for you to collect
your passport.
Temporary passports are not issued anymore.
