Travel to the UK for South Africans just got easier, and it’s down to Brexit

Source: BBC News, 26/03/2019

The EU has been pushed back two months, as Prime Minister Theresa
May struggles to find a deal that appeases voters and members of
her own party. However, chaotic planning aside, it seems like
travel to the UK is set to become a lot easier for South Africans…
and yes, it will be thanks to Brexit.
How Brexit will effect South Africa and its travellers
In Chancellor Philip Hammond‘s Spring Statement (March 2019), it
was revealed that all non-EEA passengers would no longer have to
fill-in the laborious landing cards when they arrive in the
country.
The much-maligned process causes terribly-long queues and adds to
the fatigue of travellers who have just made the journey half-way
across the world.
The move has been brought in to ensure that the UK remains
competitive with its rival markets once Article 50 has been
triggered. Easing these travel restrictions will, apparently,
“increase the ease of doing business” there.
Karen Dee is the Chief Executive of the Airport Operators
Association (AOA). She hailed the move as an “excellent step
forward” and hoped that this would help clear even more “red-tape
issues” in the future.
“We continue to urge the Government to build on this excellent
step forward by working with industry on a long-term plan how to
improve the welcome the UK gives at the border and demonstrate
that Global Britain is open for business.”
“The abolition of the outdated landing cards used by non-EEA
passengers when arriving in the UK is welcome news. This paves the
way for further steps to reduce bureaucracy and make the UK border
fit for the 21st century.”
International travel restrictions to the UK “will ease”
Other international tourists could feel the benefits of Brexit
Britain, too: Major airports in the country will also be told to
allow citizens from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan,
Singapore and South Korea to use the e-passport gates in their
terminals.
Rather than wait in an endless queue just to have a customs
official take an age inspecting your passport, the electronic
system allows visitors to simply scan their travel document while
looking into a camera. It’s time-saving, highly efficient, and
shows that the Brits are ready to expand their horizons.
