The public including school children stand in long queues, even on rainy days.
The public is frustrated with poor service at the Department of Home Affairs office in Port Shepstone.
Some have done online applications and allocated a date to visit its offices. However, on arrival they are told to go home as it had enough people in the queue for that specific date.
According to a Shelly Beach resident who did not wish to be named fearing intimidation, she was sent back three times after standing in a long queue for an entire morning.
“It is sickening as they are doing this to both the young and elderly, even school children who have missed a day from school and adults who took leave just to have their IDs or passport done,” said the resident.
She said what frustrates her is that the officials are not considering her travel costs and time being wasted going back and forth.
Previously people slept outside the office the night before, to be in front of the queue, however to stop that the department introduced the online booking system which was meant to reduce numbers in the queue.
Some have had to brave the rain, others wake up in the early morning, only to be told to return the next day.
“Clearly the department is not bothered as to how its systems work. How can it ask us to book online, only to be told the office has reached its numbers for the day. Does its system not calculate the number of bookings made for a certain day?,” questioned another community member.
The department was contacted for comment last week, however none had been received at the time of going to press
