The Giyani Commercial Court in Limpopo has sentenced a Department of Home Affairs employee to an effective eight years in prison for fraud and corruption.
The department said the court sentenced Amos Ngwenyama on Friday.
Ngwenyama, who was stationed at the Malamulele branch, accepted bribes and fraudulently issued birth certificates to foreign nationals.
He was arrested last year by the Home Affairs Counter Corruption Unit and Hawks.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said Ngwenyama colluded with Isaac Baloyi to fraudulently issue a birth certificate for R1 000.
`The Home Affairs investigation team, which was aware of the pending transaction, acted swiftly, arresting both the accused and Baloyi in 2021. An unauthorised birth certificate and R1 000 were [seized],` she added.
Malabi-Dzhangi said Baloyi initially pleaded not guilty during the trial.
However, last year, he pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced to a fine of R6 000 or an effective two-year jail term (five-years and an additional two years, wholly suspended for five years).
The NPA said Baloyi opted to pay the R6 000 fine.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi welcomed Ngwenyama`s arrest and sentencing, saying it demonstrated the department`s zero-tolerance against corruption.
He said the public expected government officials to conduct themselves with integrity.
`We have no tolerance for any acts of corruption and malfeasance.
`The public expects government officials to uphold the highest ethical and moral standards.
`They are also expected to be honest in serving the public and the state,` he said.
Motsoaledi vowed to tackle corruption in the department.
`We will uproot this plague from the government and are poised to emerge victorious,` Motsoaledi added.
