Cape Town - The University of Cape Town’s Refugee Rights Unit has
called on the Department of Home Affairs to re-open its Refugee
Reception Offices for first-time asylum applications.
Johannesburg - Around 278 foreign nationals from around the world are
currently receiving their South African naturalisation certificates
from Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba at a naturalisation ceremony
in Durban.
Johannesburg �` THE euphoria that greeted the announcement by South
Africa regarding the extension of permits for thousands of Zimbabweans
has turned into despair for scores of the migrants who are yet to
receive their documents, almost a year after the process began.
The uncertainty comes amid a lack of clarity after the exercise, which
was initially anticipated to be concluded in a matter of weeks, has
dragged on for 11 months.
The Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs advises
nationals travelling to South Africa for medical purposes to always
obtain Medical Visas before leaving the country.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rebuffed a Saudi demand Wednesday for
Canada to fix what it calls a `big mistake` - a reference to the
Trudeau government raising concerns about the jailing of human rights
activists in the kingdom.
Former ministers â€` as well as the incumbent minister of home affairs -
have been identified as possible witnesses to be called to appear
before a parliamentary committee probing the naturalisation of the
Guptas as South Africans.
The party has called Malusi Gigaba’s ‘war on queues’ a farce.
The Democratic Alliance on Wednesday said the immigration office at
the Beitbridge border post had only two working computers, partly
explaining the long wait endured by those traveling to South Africa’s
